I never had a CTD when I ran the game unpatched, but then again, the "memory leak" or whatever it is that makes the game get progressively slower and slower as it runs through the factions each turn was getting super oppressive by ten turns into a campaign, I'd end the turn and then go off and rebuild an engine or something, and when I came back, it'd be just about ready to give me a shot again.
